MINISTERS DEBATE WHEN A PRO-LIFE PRIVATE MEMBER’S MOTION ACTUALLY BEGINS

(OTTAWA) - The abortion issue is back in the spotlight as MPs consider whether to create a committee to look at the legal definition of when human life begins.

While Stephen Harper insists he opposes reopening the abortion debate, opposition parties and women’s rights groups are insisting this is an attempt to criminalize abortion, forcing the question; “When does a motion really begin?”

Conservatives are staunchly backing the belief that a motion becomes a motion at the moment of conception, as in when it was formed in Conservative MP Stephen Woodworth’s (Kitchener, Ont.) brain and mouth.

The NDP and Liberals remain staunchly in opposition; having consistently stood by the definition of a motion being not legally a motion until it emerges fully formed from months of debate and an excruciatingly painful vote in the House.

The motion will get one hour of debate today after which it will sit and gestate through the summer. If nature takes its course, the notion will become a motion in Sept when the House is expected to vote on the motion after the summer recess.

In the meantime, NDP and Liberals are expected to attempt to terminate the potential motion at the earliest possible opportunity and with the greatest convenience and then try to forget that it ever happened.
